Future-Proofing

We are often asked how people can future-proof their installation. The truth of the matter is that the real answer simply isn't feasible - to run conduit everywhere. Any installer will tell you that conduit, particularly the smaller types used in domestic installations, can be very difficult to pull cables through.

The real answer to future-proofing is to look carefully at your project, your lifestyle and where you see these heading. Most good installations will last around ten years before replacements and upgrades of any significance are required. New standards will always come through however most people who follow the cutting-edge of technology really only do so in a single room, limiting the impact significantly.

We take several approaches to future-proofing when designing projects. Firstly understanding you and your requirements - if you don't have a musical ear you are unlikely to ever want the highest quality audio cabling for possible future use. Making sure you have cables or a good size conduit to possible locations for future screens or other equipment is the next step along with ensuring you have a few more cables than you need today.

The next approach you can take is to consider fibre optic cabling throughout. In commercial properties this is usually more straight forward than domestic. Ultimately fibre-optic solutions will scale to all foreseeable and even many solutions beyond.

One other thing to consider is space. Whilst a subject in itself, ensuring you have adequate space at key points in the building for new equipment, cable runs etc. is key to being able to upgrade later.

You may wonder why wireless hasn't been mentioned. Again, whilst a subject in itself, more and more systems are using wireless technology however high-bandwidth signals like uncompressed high-definition are simply too demanding for most applications. With the various wireless implementation standards also constantly evolving also, the simplest answer is simply to cable where you possibly can. Leave wireless to your hand-held controls.
